If you’re taking the knife with you in the field, the blade’s lanyard hole sits just behind the handle, providing a secure location to attach your lanyard.

These G10 grips have a very nice traction surface milling to them which makes them slip free in the hand without being uncomfortable. The palm swell coupled with the thicker than factory handles filled the hand perfectly and really helped lock the knife in my grip and reduced the tendency to twist in my hand like I had with the original ones. When I originally got my Architect 5.5, it had the linen micarta scales on it. I liked them, but thought they were too smooth, despite the nice feel. These scales absolutely complete the ESEE. I was worried the 2×2 layering would look too much like tie-die haha, but they 100% do not. The brown and black paired with ESEE’s FDE looks incredible. After getting my ESEE 6 and handling it for a while I found the stock Micarta scales to be a bit on the blocky side and they didn’t quite feel right in hand after some usage. Once installed, the coyote scales from TKC were a much better fit in hand. They also are a great colour match for the TKC Kydex sheath and molle backer. Overall impression of the scales is that they are well made, sturdy and the supplied kit for installation was helpful. Totally different feel from the factory micarta scales. Better? For me, absolutely. Perfect fit? Well, not quite ‘perfect,’ but only an hair off. Okay, maybe half an hair. (I might fiddle with it a bit more and see if I can reduce that even more.) Something to be aware of is that the keys that come with the G10 scales may not be the correct size for the factory screws. I’ve always admired Randall’s designs going back to the days when he worked with Ontario and vowed that some day I would own a few of his designs. That day has come and gone…the 5 series blade excels in the outdoors and doubles in a tactical role without being to large or heavy. This blade will take the abuse! The micarta scales are ok, but TKC’s G10 scales transforms this blade into a precision, highly functional instrument ergonomically-a must upgrade. TKC’s Brown Micarta are hands down a better feeling handle when compared to ESEE’s older, ‘slab-sides’ style scales. Choosing between TKC’s and the newer ESEE 3d handles is going to be personal preferences. I have both types and can honestly say that I like both (xl glove size, but a ‘meaty’ hand with average finger length). So far when I squeeze and hold both brands as hard as I can with my dominant hand, TKC’s handles are feeling better. If you are on the fence about upgrading the handles on your ESEE, do yourself a favour and just buy these. I’ve had my ESEE 6 for almost 8 years and put the stock handles through the ringer. I’ve always found them a bit odd in the hand as they are quite flat and squared off. These handle scales greatly improve the ergonomics as they are more rounded at the top and bottom compared to the squared off ESEE scales and they also have a nice palm swell in the middle. This means that the knife is locked into the palm of your hand and feels amazingly great. The grain on the micarta is also a bit more coarse than the stock scales which also makes for a more secure grip. The color and pattern of the scales looks great in person, almost reminiscent of dark wood like walnut. — Originally posted at TheKnifeConnection
