Most ferrocerium rods last for a very long time, with most providing at least 10,000 strikes, if not significantly more. For example, the AK Firesteel Ferrocerium Rod – Blue & Black G10 Handle is designed to deliver 12,000 strikes. Each of these strikes will produce 4,000 to 5,500-degree sparks.
A Swedish Firesteel is not very big at all. Although most ferro rods are capable of producing thousands of strikes throughout their lifetimes, they’re on the smaller end of the spectrum. The AK Firesteel Ferrocerium Rod – Blue & Black G10 Handle, for instance, is only 3/8″ (10mm), and it comes in at just 2.8 ounces.
Yes, you can attach a ferrocerium rod to your knife sheath, provided you purchase one with the appropriate loop for storage. The “EX” Leather DANGLER Sheath for the Architect AK 3 and AK 3.5 Knife is a great example of this. Although it is on the smaller side, it features a 3/8″ Firesteel loop.
